Where a bettor meets your book before you do
Before the first bet, a bettor searches your name and the offer, then the odds for the next fixture, and more and more often asks an AI assistant which book to use. We measured all three, because those results decide who takes the sign-up.
On 23 October 2026 we pulled the Google results for fifteen licensed books’ own name plus their offer (in the US “[book] promo code”, in the UK “[book] sign up offer”). We also pulled fifteen odds searches across the US and UK sporting calendar, with twelve months of search demand for each, and put twelve questions bettors ask before choosing a book to Perplexity and ChatGPT with web search on.
| What we measured | Result | What it means for you |
|---|
| Your own name plus your offer: the book at #1 | 8 of 15 books. Three were not in the top 10 at all | The bettor who has already chosen you lands on someone else’s page first. Of all the searches you can win, this one should be the easiest. |
| Your own name plus your offer: media and affiliate results on page one | 7 of 10, median | Most of the first page is publishers and affiliates paid per sign-up for a player who searched for you by name. |
| Odds searches: first-page slots held by licensed books | 25% in the US, 59% in the UK. An offshore book ranked on 6 of the 10 US searches | In the US, odds searches belong to media. Your odds page is up against ESPN and an unlicensed book, not just the books you see in the ads. |
| Odds searches: busiest month against the quietest | 94 times, median. The Masters: 246,000 searches in April, 110 in August | Demand comes in spikes on the calendar. A page that isn’t ranking before the spike earns nothing that year. |
| AI answers to bettors’ questions: citations of a book’s own site | 0 of 120 on Perplexity, 1 of 63 on ChatGPT (a press release) | The answer that names you is built from other people’s pages. Being named there is earned on the pages it reads. |
One more thing the run showed. Penn’s sportsbook now trades as theScore Bet, and its new name ranks first for its own promo search. The old name, ESPN Bet, does not: affiliates hold that page, and ChatGPT still listed ESPN BET next to theScore Bet as two books legal in North Carolina. A rename is an SEO project as much as a branding one, and so is every licence and domain change.

Method: Google results through DataForSEO, desktop, US and UK, 23 October 2026, one snapshot per search. Search demand from Google Ads, October 2025 to September 2026, in Google’s rounded buckets; the 2026 World Cup falls inside the window. AI answers from Perplexity (sonar) and ChatGPT (gpt-4.1-mini, web search on), US location, one run per question. Licensed books are brands licensed in the market searched; ESPN, CBS Sports, Action Network and other odds publishers are counted as media, even where they earn affiliate revenue.
